It is not a secret that men long for sex more than women. Some say that women go to bed with men as they want to pay such a price for their relationship.

In 1979, Elaine Hatfield and Russell Clark did an experiment that appeared to be very popular later. They invited students from the Florida State University as volunteers who approached strangers on the territory of the campus with a pick-up line. They started with a common phrase: “I have seen you on campus. You are very beautiful”, and continued with one of three phrases:

  1. “Would you go out with me tonight?”
  2. “Will you come to my apartment tonight?”
  3. “Will you go to bed with me?”

An answer “yes” or “no” was a score.

Within the experiment, both women and men were equally approached by volunteers of opposite sex. And the results didn’t surprise. The two sexes were equally glad to have a date (50% said yes, and 50% said no). However, when it came to the offer of sex, no woman wanted to have it with a stranger, while three-quarters of men accepted random sex with a complete stranger.

Such results raised controversies in their interpretation. Some experts say that such behavior is determined by different sex drives, which are deeply related to biological aspects and the logic of different sexes. A woman wants that her sexual partner contributes to their relationship and her future generation. She has a limit on the number of children she can have and, thus, prefers high quality and is choosy not to lose an opportunity of giving birth to a smart and beautiful child.

A man doesn’t pay such attention to quality as he is not limited in the number of children. Therefore, he would like to use any opportunity he can and go to bed with any woman. He only benefits, while the cost appears to be low.

Such logic does explain the results of the experiment, but it is not the only reason. The matter is that the participants are not the representatives of all men and women. They are certain males and females from a particular place and time who live in certain social conditions and environment – American students of a university at the end of the XX century. Thus, sex drives in men and women may be similar – their behavior may be determined by the society they live in.

The Archives of Sexual Behavior published another study exploring the issue of men’s and women’s sex drives. Heiko Hecht and Andreas Baranowski repeated the study mentioned above though with some changes. There were German students of the 21st century. The results were similar. However, the researchers suggested that the reason why women refused from casual sex could be fear. Fear of losing reputation in the society where women’s sexual activity is treated more severely than men’s. Fear of experiencing harm or violence from an encounter with a complete stranger.

To define if women’s refusal was based on fear, they developed a scenario where the participants could accept the offer of sex discarding fear and physical harm. The members were invited to visit the laboratory to help a dating company estimate the compatibility rating algorithm. They received ten pictures of the opposite sex and were said that all of them had agreed to have a date or sex with the participants. Such aspects and absence of fear were supposed to reveal the real attitude of the members to dating and random sex with total strangers.

And what dramatic results! 100% of men and 97% of women didn’t want to lose a chance to have a date or sex at least with one partner. The women who were offered to have sex chose less than three men with whom they would like to meet. The men wanted more than three women with whom they would like to have a sexual encounter.

So, the study suggests that certain circumstances can disclose a real sex drive in women that appears to be similar to men’s. Therefore, any experiment on or research into gender differences requires the broad analysis of both biological aspects and behavior. These new results may mean that we should change our thoughts about differences in the way the society treats men and women.
